The recently held Trades Union Congress passed a motion calling for an end to policies compelling female staff to wear high heels for work. The resolution also called for risk assessment of the increasing use of high heels at workplaces.
The motion was put forward by the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists. Lorraine Jones, a member of the Society, said women working in the retail sector are forced by their bosses to wear heels as a part of their formal dress code. The motion demanded employees’ freedom to select their dresses. It noted that the National Health Service (NHS) spends millions of pounds every year on foot operations. The resolution also mentioned the loss of about 2 million days per year, due to workers suffering from limb disorders and missing office.
However, Lorraine Monk of the University and College Union (UCU) did not agree with the motion. She said no one has the right to decide what a woman should wear. She questioned the constant pressure on women to accept rules made by men. She also pointed out that the motion will probably be described as fashion policing by the media. Monk stressed on women’s rights to make their own choices, and cited a case that her union had won. The incident involved a college that had ordered female lecturers to keep their arms covered all the time. She said that again it was a man who had thought out this weird idea. Monk believed instead of wasting time on directing women about what they should do, the focus should be on debating the women’s charter and addressing the issue of inequality in pays based on the gender of the employee. She advised against bringing up topics that may start a debate on gender roles and about which women have a particular opinion.
