Flooring Considerations

There are numerous factors which need to be taken into consideration when choosing what type of

href="http://www.yourfloors.co.uk">flooring to get fitted. Getting new flooring installed in

your home can breathe new life into it and can be a great way to reinvigorate your living

environment. It may not be as expensive as you think either.

A big consideration on what flooring to choose is how that particular room will be used. Flooring

which makes sense for the front room may not be appropriate for the kitchen or bathroom for example.

Some of the more widely used types of flooring are carpet, vinyl, wood, and laminate.

Laminate flooring can be a fantastic substitute for solid wood floors if you are looking for a wood

effect floor for a fraction of the price. Laminate flooring consists of a sheet of MDF with a wood-

effect plastic surface fixed to it. One pitfall of laminate flooring is that whilst it is resistant

to sctratches once it is damaged it is impossible to repair. Apart from that it can still be a

perfect choice for a kitchen, where the plastic coating provides an easily cleanable surface. On the

other hand a solid wood flooring would not be advisable in a bathroom, or indeed any room which is

likely to get very humid and wet. Some woods are particularly sensitive to moisture such as

beech.

If you are planning to install a wooden floor, its important you have a suitable surface to fit it

on. Ideally your existing floor needs to be flat, and dry. There are options however to counter

uneven flooring problems, such as laying ply throughout, or employing an underlay to create a

floating floor.

Often laminate flooring is sold as a product you can assemble without help which is another useful

way of keeping costs down. Solid wood flooring requires however a higher degree of DIY skills, so it

can sometimes be advisable to get solid wooden floors fitted professionally which on the downside

can add substantially to the cost.

One point to remember many people do not realise when they measure their room to calculate how much

flooring they will need ” is that it is crucial to include a 10mm gap around the edge of the room

for the wooden flooring to expand and contract.

As a fundamental part of any interior design scheme, it is vital to choose the right flooring.

Whilst wooden or laminate floors can be ideal ” often for a more chic minimalist look; carpet can be

a better option if you are trying to achieve a more traditional home feel. The important thing is

you take into account the various factors you need to consider before ordering new flooring.

An Unexpected Freezer Outage Can Be Very Costly

Did you have any power problems at your house? Did your refrigerator break last night? Are you worried about the food you had in the freezer?

Not to worry - there are some simple guidelines to food safety in such a situation.

Through the food away when it is thawed or warmed to room temperature. If it has been kept at room temperature for more than two hours, throw it away.

If the food is mostly thawed, but still cold, cook it immediately. Foods that have been cooked may then be consumed or refrigerated for later use.

You can freeze the food again if ice crystals have formed on the surface. You can put it in a cooler with some dry ice if no freezer is available. These items will need to be cooked, because your freezer will not offer the same longevity that a normal freezer would offer.

If you notice any food with even a little freezer burn, you need to throw it away.

It’s not possible to prevent the occurrence of unexpected power interruptions due to weather or accidents, but it is possible to react properly in such cases.
If your existing fridge or freezer has seen better days, the best advice that anyone can give you is you invest in a new one. Definitely consider a large refrigerator/freezer as used in America is if there is space for it. This can make a dramatic change to any kitchen. A broad selection of American refrigerators and freezers is available for viewing at this site.

Great bamboo flooring

After recognizing the harmful effects caused by chemical based flooring options such as vinyl, people in US now prefer safer, healthier and environmental friendly flooring options. One such option is bamboo flooring that has increasingly gained popularity as a suitable flooring material, be it a home or an office.

Some of the qualities that make bamboo a wonderful choice for home flooring option include its ability to withstand hot and cold climates, durability and strength. Ability to withstand moisture makes bamboo floors ideal for homes that are constructed in high humid climates, bathrooms and kitchens. As like any other wooden floor, bamboo floors are also quite easy to clean and maintain. Bamboo floors are also good for people suffering with allergies because bamboos do not allow accumulation of dust and are resistant to insects and mites. Apart from these, installation of a bamboo floor is not as expensive as a hardwood floor primarily because bamboos are easier to cultivate and can grow in any type of weather. However, there are certain disadvantages of bamboo flooring. Usage of wet mops is not suggested on bamboo floors since it can damage the wood. One should avoid walking on these floors wearing spikes or heels because bamboo floors are brittle unlike hardwood floors. Also, bamboo floors lack variety in terms of shades and patterns, thus providing very less choice to customers.

Patio Furniture Extend Your Living Quarters

Your living quarters don’t have to stop within the perimeters of the traditional rooms like the kitchen, living room and bedroom. Pull your living quarters farther out by dressing up your patio. Patio furniture is the key to pulling the look together.

When searching for patio furniture, consider how exposed to the elements your furniture will be. If you have a covered or closed in patio, you can use furniture that is not suited for outdoors. If your patio is open, be sure to buy furniture that is okayed for the elements.

For instance, there are some rockers that look great on patios but they have a note attached that they are not suited for outdoor use. Something like this must be brought in whenever it is not in use. If you decide you just must have it any way, make sure you have a place in your home or storage to hold it until its next use.

If you decide to buy wicker or rattan furniture, check to see if the manufacturer has warnings against outdoor use. Some wicker and rattan furniture is not meant for use outside, but other wicker and rattan has been specially treated for outdoor use. It comes down to checking the label or packaging to know for sure. If you have any doubt, contact the manufacturer. As the store from which you purchased it for the contact info or look it up on line if you can’t find it elsewhere.

If style is not a high concern on your list but finding cheap, practical patio furniture is, check out the resin tables and chairs on the market. The tables and chairs are sturdy. You can even buy resin foot rests, end tables and coffee tables. This type of furniture weathers well in all elements and the only style concern you face with resin furniture is fading or dullness that comes along with being outside. You can find resin furniture at just about any discount store. It’s seasonal, so start looking for it to appear on shelves and display floors in the spring. The price for a simple resin chair ranges from $6 to $10 in most places. Chaise lounge chairs made from the same resin are a little more expensive. You can expect to pay $30 to $40 each for those. The price of resin tables varies based on the size. A small table, like an end table or a foot stool, are about the same price as the simple chairs. A large table costs more. The high end of the design in resin furniture is the table with a hole in the middle for an umbrella. In addition to providing shade from the hot sun, an umbrella can really dress up the look of resin patio furniture. A simple green or white table becomes festive when a brightly colored umbrella is thrown into the mix!

So, no matter how much money you have to spend, you can extend your living quarters outside the boundary of tradition. Invest in some patio furniture and you can create an outdoor living room of sorts!

Use Wallpaper Borders to Decorate Your Room

The use of wallpaper borders is quite common for any room of the
house. A border is placed either through the middle of a wall or
about three feet from the floor to separate the top of the wall
from the bottom. There are many ways these accents can be used
to add vitality to any room. If you have two colors of wall
paper, then you can put one color on top and the other on the
bottom, with the wallpaper border covering up the place where
they meet. The fashion is to have a plain or striped pattern on
the top and a flowered pattern on the bottom. You can also have
the top portion of the wall painted and wallpaper on the bottom.
The wallpaper border makes an attractive blend between the two
styles.

Some people use wallpaper borders on their own to separate two
different colors that they have painted their walls. Many people
use them to give the appearance of a high wall by placing the
border about a foot from the ceiling. There may or may not be
two different colors involved, as this style looks nice with
just the border.

Wallpaper borders are available in many different designs from
ordinary to raised and etched patterns. There are types of
borders that are white in color and can be painted whatever
color you desire to match your décor. The width of the border
also varies, but is generally about 8 inches.

Putting on wallpaper borders is not a difficult task. The back
of the border has a glue that will stick to the wall or other
paper when it is wet. There are also peel and stick borders that
do not require any water. You just have to peel off the backing
and attach the border to the wall. These borders are great
because if you make a mistake, they are easy to remove and
attach again.

You can find multiple kinds of wallpaper borders at the home
décor center of any department and home improvement stores.
There is usually a chart showing you how to match the wallpaper
and the borders so that the color scheme will accentuate your
home. Many of these stores also have qualified interior design
specialists who can help you with any problems or questions you
may have.

The Art of Replacing Screens

To remove a screen door lift up and simultaneously pull out the bottom. If it sticks you can take a putty knife, or a regular pocket knife, and on your knees, find where the two little wheels at the bottom of the screen door are. Slip the putty knife under each one and lift them off of their track. While you’re putting the putty knife under the wheels lift up a little on the screen door. Once you have them free you can lift the door out.

With windows there should be, but aren’t always, two little tabs at the bottom, side, or the top of the screen frame. If they’re at the bottom pull up on the tabs and free the screen frame. Sometimes these tabs break off or pull out if the screens are ancient, so you may have to push up and down on the screen frame to get it free.

Once you have the door or window out lay it down on the carpet, or wherever you’re working, and find the end of the rubber gasket which is called a spline that is holding the screen in. This gasket/spline is rubber and embedded in a canal on one side of the door or window. You’re going to find the end of this rubber spline and pull it out. It will come out fairly easy. Once you have pulled all of it out the screen will fall out.
Now, if you’re working on a screen door you’ll have to unscrew the handle and lock assembly, which is no big deal. Just remember how yours goes back together. Sometimes you only have to remove the plastic piece that is on the side where the spline is, but each door is a little different so it’s difficult to say if the whole piece has to be removed. I’ve had it go both ways.

With the door or window laying on the ground roll your new screening over the top of it. You can get the screening mesh at your hardware store in different types of fabric and you can have it cut to order or buy a whole roll for future use. I prefer working with the soft dark plastic like mesh rather than the old stiffer metal like fabric.

Lay your screen material over the door or window frame. Now, there’s a little tool you need. It has two wheels on either end of it. One of the wheels has an indentation in it, and the other wheel does not. They are called a screen rolling tool, or a splining tool. You can get them at your local hardware store.

Now, here’s the tricky part. You want to push the new spline down into the canal with the new screen underneath it. Make sure your screen is laid out nice and even before you begin and continue to smooth it as you work. Push the end of the spline down into the canal, then with the rolling tool, using the wheel with an indentation, begin working the spline into the canal. As you work pull on your spline a little to stretch it out so that it goes into the groove a little easier, but not too much. The trick here is not to cut into the screen, and this takes a delicate balance and patience. If you cut into your new screen you have to start all over again.

If you’re right handed start with the left hand side of the window or door; that way you can work with your right hand, or if you’re left handed start with the right hand side of the window. You’ll see what I mean once you get started.

So, you’re working your way down the groove and everything is going okay and you come to a corner. Now, if you like you can snip off the spline, imbed it in the groove right up to the end, or you can round the corner, not cut the spline and work it in with your fingers, or sometimes I use the dull rounded tip of a pair of scissors, or straight slot screwdriver to push it in around corners, but be careful not to cut into your new screening material.

Keep stretching, pulling, and imbedding your spline while at the same time smoothing your screen so that it doesn’t have any wrinkles or creases in it. When you’re finished cut off your excess spline and you’re done.

You can use the other wheel on the rolling tool to push the spline deeper down into the groove, but I rarely if ever do.

Don’t forget to put your lock assembly back into place.

To reinstall the screen door place the top section into its track first and then once again getting down on your knees hold the spring loaded wheels up with your putty knife and try and settle the wheels, which have grooves in them, on to the rail they rest on. This can be maddening because they will slip from one side to the other of the railing, and if they’re not setting right on the track, then the door won’t open or close smoothly. The wheels fit on the railing just like train wheels fit on a train track.

The screen should roll smoothly and effortlessly. If not you’ll find some screw adjustments at the top and bottom of the screen door frame. Loosen the screws on one end or the other and adjust the screen frame so it fits comfortably.

Another thing that helps screen doors move smoothly is to first clean the tracks, sweep out any debris around them, and then spray the area with WD40. Often this has saved me the trouble of making any adjustments to the door.

When reinstalling the screen window find a side of it that will fit back into the window frame. It may be the top, or one of the sides or the bottom. Rock the screen back and forth until you maneuver it back into the window frame.

Some of these old window screens are warped and bent out of shape so you’ll have one side that is bowed and won’t fit in the window frame properly. If you find yours intolerable, you can go to your hardware store and purchase a new window frame kit, cut it to size, install a new screen in it, and install it in the window frame.

That’s it.

Here are the steps in review.

1. Remove screen door or window.
2. Pull old spline out of canal.
3. Remove handle in screen door.
4. Roll screening over door or window frame.
5. Push new spline into canal over new screen.
6. Reattach handle on screen door.
7. Reinstall screen door or window.

Feng Shui - A Key to Your Success and Happiness

Every day we go into the world to create and make our way, be it
to a job or a business. We enter each day with the attitude of
accomplishment and achievement. However, for most people, during
the day we meet some sort of obstacles or roadblocks. It could
be a customer who changes the scope of the project that you just
completed the night before, the bank who needs just one more
piece of information to complete the loan you needed yesterday
or the guy who cut us off in traffic, caused us to run off the
road and miss the most important business meeting of our career.
We rise to the occasion as each monster rears its ugly head.
Each time, we expend just a little bit more of our energy that
we had planned to use on another objective. By the end of the
day we are usually one, two or even three steps behind where we
wanted to be, worn out and ready to retreat to a place where we
have peace and serenity. This also holds true for our children
today. They encounter as much stress, be it different, in the
their worlds as we adults do. They are stressed by peer pressure
to act and be different than they are taught at home and by
television and the media to become something that they are not.
These stresses can be overwhelming and we are all looking for a
place where we can escape from these pressures. If this
description sounds familiar Feng Shui may be for you.

If everyday was like the one described above and you were not
able to rebuild your energy, you would begin to find yourself
running on reserves, feeling exhausted like you can never get
ahead of the game. Running on reserves can work for a while if
you are still in your 20’s and maybe even your 30’s but
eventually your reserves can be depleted and you are as the song
goes +running on empty. The stresses of each day are piled upon
the stresses of the day before and the day before that, until
you no longer have the patience and tolerance to deal with
seemingly insignificant issues as they arise. These stresses
also can make us feel less then capable, which makes dealing
with situations even more difficult. This level of stress when
not dealt with can start to impact your performance at work and
your ability to nurture and grow interpersonal relationships,
leaving you feeling like you are in a rut with no way out.

If your energy levels are at their peak you have a greater
chance of successfully creating new opportunities and dealing
with the day to day experiences and pressures. Feng Shui can help you.
You can have the ability to clearly see and deal with each issue
as it is and not through the filter of stress, frustration and
feeling less than. This clarity when added to peak performance
can assist you in achieving what ever you desire. We all have
had those rare days when everything came together, when you were
in the right place at the right time, when the answer to all of
your bosses questions were on the tip of your tongue. But how
did that happen? How can we create this on a daily basis?

To achieve this level of clarity and performance you must have
an environment away from the demands and chaos of the everyday
world, where you can go to rejuvenate, rebuild your energy and
find clarity. Many people think that they can find this state of
being on a vacation in Hawaii or some place similar. But,
usually this state of being is only temporary. This level of
being that you seek must be nurtured on a daily basis in an
environment without stress, tension and conflict. A successful
environment for nurturing your level of clarity, and performance
will be calming, uplifting and healing.

For most, this environment will be your home. The balance and
harmony in your home is a critical factor in dealing with these
stresses and are important for your success and happiness. When
a home feels calming and nurturing, with no distractions, you
can quiet the mind and sort out what is important and what is
not. You can create new ideas on how to proceed and how to
handle obstacles. You can start to see clearly what actions need
to be taken. When life is full of complications it is often hard
to distinguish the forest from the trees. If you have clarity,
you can sort out all of the issues and deal with them one at a
time, making clear decisions on each issue instead of
complicating each issue with other issues. This type of clarity
will also give you the ability to see solutions that you could
not see before.

Unfortunately because of the pressures of society to achieve at
all costs, some houses today have become purely investments and
places to impress clients, customers and friends. These houses
have been designed strictly for the purpose of business and that
is the master that they serve. In these situations the home is
completely ignored, leaving no refuge for the soul to
rejuvenate. Notice the usage of the words house and home. A
house is just a physical structure, where a home is a physical
structure that has been created for the purpose of nurturing the
soul. Ironically, if the house were used for the purpose of
nurturing and healing the soul, success in the outside world
would come much easier. In today’s fast pace world it is even
more important to create homes instead of houses. Homes designed
for business, investment and to keep up with the Jones’s, also
ignore family identity and intimacy. This loss of family
identity undermines the stability of the family and the role
models set for children. The loss of intimacy starts to
breakdown communication and the core of family relationships.
These problems just add to the stress level in the home,
complicating our lives.

If we are to be successful in life we must start to address the
environment where our ability to succeed is created. As many
psychologists have said and most people would agree, +we are
products of our environment. But what parts of that environment
shape us? How is it that some children who come from the worst
of neighborhoods are able to rise above the circumstances of
their external environment of crime and poverty? How is it that
some children who come from homes that are in the best of
neighborhoods and have ideal external environments end up with
drug or alcohol problems? Are the external factors in our
environment like the location that we live in or the size of the
home the factors that shape us? No, it has to do with the
internal environment we live in. That child rises out of the
ghetto because somewhere he/she received a nurturing environment
that allowed them to rise above the circumstances.

It is the internal environment we live in that plays an integral
part in creating the external aspects of our lives. If your
internal environment is one of balance and harmony, a space that
is nurturing, where you feel safe, secure and at peace, you can
let go of the days challenges and come back to your source of
power. Then you can start each new day refreshed and
rejuvenated.
