Tesco’s Four Years Old VoIP Service to Come to an End This Month

Tesco has been focusing on its mobile and mobile broadband portfolio. It has mobile outlets in its bigger stores and its own mobile service that is being routed through O2’s network. This has led to the realisation at Tesco that the current market is up for mobile broadband and not VoIP, which has not been able to make a place for itself in the market since its launch in 2006. As a result, the company is stopping the service after April 27th. It has made it clear that the users will not be able to get any further recharges and if they have some balance, they can get a refund from the company.

VoIP was expected to soon become a rage, as it provided cheap telephone service through internet. The call rates were low. The calls to UK landlines were @ of 2p/minute while to UK mobiles @ of 10p/minute. Calls made between Tesco internet telephone users were free at all points of time. Due to low calls rates, many people subscribed to the service. However, the use was usually limited to make long distance calls where they could save a lot of money.

As a spokesman for Tesco suggested, the service has become untenable for the company and thus it has decided to close it and concentrate on the technologies which are more favoured now or, where the money is, because it certainly isn’t in VoIP.
