Shulman Wins 2009 WSOPE
The 2009 Worlds Series of Europe was won by American Barry Shulman, with well-known poker online star, Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu, finishing in second place. The WSOPE took place at The Casino at The Empire in Leicester Square, London. The main event started with 342 contestants. Shulman took the Main Event bracelet shortly after 5am on October 2 along with the £801,603 first place prize money. Negreanu’s second place casino finish marked a new milestone for the Canadian player - with the £495,589 cash prize, Kid Poker now hold the record for the most in money tournament prizes won, toppling Jamie Gold from that spot. The Main Event lasted six days, with the last poker hand being a cliffhanger. The flop came Jc 8d 5d, which Negreanu checked. Shulman bet 300k, and Negreanu came back over the top with a check raise of 900,000. At that point, Shulman shoved in all his chips and Negreanu called, turning over Qc and Jd. Shulman flipped pocket Aces, trouncing his opponent’s Jacks. The turn brought a miracle Jack for Negreanu and it looked like his trips would take the title. But the river brought another miracle card - the third Ace for Shulman, making him the champion. This was not his first bracelet win. In 1997, he won the $3,000 Pot Limit Hold ‘Em event, and 2001 he took the $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo event. He also has cashed in 11 other events. His son, Jeff, publisher of Card Player magazine, is one of the November Nine final table contestants in the 2009 WSOP taking place in Las Vegas. The other final table contestants finished: 3. Praz Bansi £360,887 4. Jason Mercier £267,267 5. Markus Ristola £200,367 6. Chris Bjorin £150,267 7. Antoine Saout £114,228 8. Matt Hawrilenko £87,074 9. James Akenhead £66,533
