There’s a revolution brewing in the telephone industry. But it’s not the recent demise of AT&T or the failure of Worldcom. It’s a new, yet proven, technology that lets you talk with friends, family and loved ones over the Internet.
It’s called VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or broadband phone, and it lets you use your ordinary home or office telephone to dial and talk to anyone using the Internet as your “channel” of communication. Instead of dialing through the Bell System copper wires, you make calls through your DSL or cable Internet access provider. No microphones or headsets. Just use your existing telephone to talk throughout North America and the world.
This new technology not only saves you 50 to 60 percent on your monthly phone bill. It also provides a host of services the phone company cannot. One of these - a “virtual phone number” — can eliminate long distance charges to friends and family who want to call you. Here’s how it works.
When you order your VoIP phone service you can also order a second phone number in a distant city. For example, if you live in Philadelphia you’re in the 215 area code. And, if you have relatives in Los Angeles, you can order a virtual number in area code 818 (Los Angeles). Then, when a family member in LA wants to call you, they simply dial the 818 phone number, which is a local call for them. Amazingly enough, your phone rings in area 215. Your family gets to talk to you for the cost of a local call: for free.
Virtual numbers are great for kids going away to college. Rick and Patti live in Cleveland and have a son going to college at Kennesaw State University, near Atlanta. They can order a VoIP phone number with the Cleveland area code for the home phone, and get an Atlanta area virtual number. Then, when their son wants to call home, he makes a local Atlanta call and the phone rings at Mom and Dad’s house, 700 miles away.
Of course VoIP phone service also provides toll free numbers - usually at less than two cents per minute - giving you yet another way to make it easy for friends and family to stay in touch.
Get virtual! Join the millions of people jumping on the VoIP bandwagon and start enjoying the rich features and accessibility you can get through broadband phone service.

Well it is hard to stay in style in the world of neckties. Too stuffy and you look silly. Too silly and you look like you are a fool or former class clown. If you are a salesman you need many ties in your car so that you can change them to fit the mood and ambiance of your clientele. If you are selling to an industrial firm and you look too slick, they are liable to kick your rear end out the door. If you walk into a large corporation with a tie, which mocks the dress code you will certainly not get the sale. What a dilemma indeed. But there is a better way, a new technology, which will change all this. You ask how?
The “Holographic Neck Tie” will solve all your problems. How does it work? Well, glad you are interested. The Windsor knot is standard, but the knot is a projector device, which clips onto your shirt at the top, like those clip-on ties. A fishing line sized string hangs down and is fastened to a lower level button. The line is made of carbon nanotech fiber material and will not break and it guides the Holographic tie replica image to enlarge or contract as needed while walking, sitting or standing up. Each Holographic tie has 24 images to choose from and you can also purchase other theme cartridges to put in the back if you wish to purchase them from the HNT Corporation. Think on this in 2006.

Dogs are one of the most popular pets around the world. Although almost everyone has had contact with a dog at some point in their lives, few people understand the danger that lurks in the heart of man’s best friend. There is currently a dog bite epidemic sweeping the United States. The 65 million dogs in America will bite 4.7 million people this year, and 800,000 will require serious medical attention. That is almost 1,000 people a day; nearly 2% of the entire population. Sadly, most of the victims of dog bites are young children between the ages of seven and 15. Statistics show that almost all severe dog-inflicted injuries occur on children under the age of 10, and most of the dogs that attack people are known to the victim and belong to a family or friends.
Although any dog can become dangerous if mistreated or abused, there are some breeds of dog that tend to attack more often than other breeds. According to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control between 1979 and 1996, the top three breeds that attacked and killed the most people are Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and German Shepard Dogs. These three dogs accounted for more than all the other canine-related deaths combined. Other dangerous dogs that are likely to kill people include Doberman Pinchers, Huskies, Chows, and Saint Bernards.
It is important to remember that any dog is potentially dangerous. In 2000, a Pomeranian mauled to death its family’s six week old baby, even though the dog weighed only four pounds. The incident took place while the girl’s uncle prepared a bottle for her in the kitchen, and when he returned the dog was viciously attacking the baby. Dogs evolved from powerful predators, and despite thousands of years of socialization and modern techniques of training and discipline, they retain their base instincts and reactions. While this is expected and even rewarded in some breeds, it is quite a shock when smaller and less aggressive dogs attack and kill people.
Dog bites cost Americans billions of dollars every year in insurance premiums, medical bills, and lost time from work. In fact, in 1995, the insurance industry paid out over $250 million in settlements for dog bites. By 2001 this amount had risen to $310 million, and by 2002 insurance companies were paying out $345.5 million to victims of dog attacks. Although costs dipped a bit to $321.6 million in 2003, most dog bite experts agree that the costs associated with dog bites will begin to rise in the years to come. All told, victims of dog bites in the United States suffer an average of $1 billion each year in total economic losses.

In the middle of San Francisco bay, framed by some of the most beautiful and majestic views in the country lies Alcatraz Island. A federal penitentiary is not usually included on the list of one’s vacation plans, however the history and beauty of this island warrant an exception. From 1934 to 1963 a number of the most feared criminals in the American penal system called “the rock” home. Famous for the stark contrast between its stunningly serene surroundings and the harshness of life and character inside its walls, Alcatraz has found its way into American lore.
Originally named “Isla de los Alcatraces”, or “Island of the Pelicans” it was later changed and shortened to Alcatraz. Today looking out from the island visitors see a picturesque view from the Golden Gate Bridge, and downtown San Francisco, to the Bay Bridge, and Treasure Island. One can for a moment imagine this location as the setting of a luxurious resort. Turning from the views outside the island to its interior contents however, quickly brings back the notion that this island was the scene of a less comfortable history.
Most famous for its role as a prison, Alcatraz was initially a military base. When gold was discovered in California in 1848 San Francisco’s population jumped from 300 to 30,000 in a matter of years. With this new influx of population and wealth there was a need for the United States government to protect the area from other nations. In 1850 when California became a state, a triangle of fortifications was planned to protect San Francisco Bay. Upon its completion in 1853 Fortress Alcatraz took on the lead role as the most powerful coastal defense on the western coast. The landscape of the island was incorporated into the design, and high walls were built on the rocky isle, leaving the dock as the only access to the fort.
Alcatraz was never called upon to defend the bay, however a number of small incidents during the Civil War brought the island into the spot light. As its use as a defensive fortress lessoned, the island began to take on a new role, that of military prison. Eleven enlisted men were incarcerated in the guardhouse basement in 1859, and slowly deserters, thieves, and other military criminals were sent there from the San Franciscan forts. Finally in 1861 Alcatraz was named the official prison for the Department of the Pacific. The island served this role until 1933 when the cost of importing supplies led the Army to leave, sending prisoners to Kansas and New Jersey.
At this point crime in America had become an increasing problem, fed largely by the troubles associated with prohibition. A new prison was sought that could take the worst of the country’s criminals, and seclude them from the public. While land in Alaska was originally considered, the Army’s recent departure from Alcatraz cemented the island as the choice for America’s new “super-prison”. The facility was to take in the most troublesome of inmates from other prisons around the nation.
In 1934, Al Capone, perhaps the penitentiary’s most infamous prisoner, arrived as one of the first official transfers. His arrival generated enormous interest, and sparked more headlines then the opening of the prison itself. Previously while imprisoned in Atlanta, Capone had been able to achieve a lifestyle within the jail that was unheard of for other prisoners. A carpeted cell and a radio were among the niceties he was able to procure through bribes and other methods. He was even able to continue to manage his organization through relatives who established themselves in a nearby hotel. For this reason he was put on a secure prison railroad car without notice, and shipped to Alcaztraz in the hopes that the lack of outside contact would be the government’s answer to the Capone problem. On the rock Capone was never able to manipulate the warden or guards, and was confined to menial duties along with the rest of the prison population. Staying only 4 years due to health complications Capone left for FCI Terminal Island in 1939.
Despite J. Edgar Hoover’s displeasure with the idea, rising costs and a new federal prison in Illinois brought about the closing of Alcatraz in 1963. Capone, along with other famous inmates such as George “Machine Gun” Kelly, Alvin Karpis, and Robert Franklin Stroud (the birdman of Alcatraz), ensured that the prison would live in American minds for years to come. Today the island is run by the National Parks Service, which offers daily tours of the former prison. Visitors can marvel at the wildlife, gardens, and fantastic views from the high cliffs before entering the cell house where they can be locked within one of the solitary confinement cells. There in the cold pitch black room they can experience for just a brief moment what life must have been like at the prison in paradise.

The American Express Green card is a rewards card that is excellent for those with good credit who are financially able to pay the full balance each month in order to avoid accumulating credit card debt. There is no pre-set spending limit on the card, but approvals are made based on credit history, personal resources, and account history.
At no additional fee, cardholders can participate in the Membership Rewards Options program where they can earn points that can be redeemed for products and services. The card earns a cardholder one point per dollar spent except for supermarkets, drugstores, the U.S. Postal Service, and when paying wireless telephone bills when two points per dollar is earned. Points are transferable into any one of eleven frequent flyer programs, and a first time purchase bonus of 5,000 points is awarded.
The annual fee for the American Express Green Card is $65 and $30 for each additional card, but the fee for the primary card is waived for the first year. There is a 3% cash advance fee with a minimum charge of $5 for Express Cash transactions. The other morning I was driving to an appointment, inserting a CD into the player, and I couldn’t help smiling. I was thinking about my father and his career as a mechanical design engineer for RCA. After the war, he helped design the innards of the first record players RCA mass produced.
Remember the plastic cylinder you stacked 45’s onto, that slipped over the 78 spindle, and dropped records down one at a time to be played? Well, my dad holds the patent on that handy little device. Because of his ingenuity, teens all over America could dance or make out uninterrupted for a whole evening.
One of the neatest things he worked on at RCA was a record player for cars. The year was 1958. Our ‘57 Plymouth Fury was one of only two test cars in the whole country retro-fitted with a record player. It played 45’s only and was mounted upside down beneath the dash, just over the transmission hump. You first had to push a stack of records up into place, and then the diamond-tipped arm came in from underneath to play them.
The record player was set in a terrific suspension system, allowing you to drive over railroad tracks and potholes without causing Peggy Lee to skip a beat. I remember how cool I felt as we drove through town secretly playing the Everly Brothers on a record player and not the radio. “You watch, in a few years ever car in the country will have one of these in it,” my dad would tell anyone who would listen. “This is going to be big.”
Chrysler Corporation, RCA’s partner in the project, went on to feature the “Highway Hi-Fi” in their Plymouth and DeSoto models in 1960 and 1961. But after only two years on the market the whole concept of car record players quickly fizzled out, mostly for technical reasons.
My dad was pretty disappointed. His invention wasn’t holding up to the rigors of daily use in a moving automobile. (For a brief history of car record players: <http://www. ookworld.com/hiwayhifi.html>).
So how has the market treated your genius? Have you and your design team ever worked long and hard on a project, really put your heart into it, only to have it bomb in the market place, or get buried by senior management for any number of good or bad reasons?
Here’s my real question: how do you keep your own and your team’s morale level and creativity from sagging when that happens? How do you keep your team from singing the Highway Hi-Fi blues or getting as cynical as Dilbert?
T., one of my coaching clients, created a fresh vision of success for her human factors software design team after several marketing disappointments. Their previous two designs were not embraced by customers due to financial considerations despite the high quality of their end product.
They were beginning to feel that they weren’t making a difference. Her plan was to separate their sense of achievement from the market’s response to their final designs.
She accomplished this by emphasizing her team’s overall value to the company and to their industry as a whole. In other words, she shifted their paradigm for “making a difference”based on actual facts that they weren’t seeing because of their single-minded focus on the end result.
One of the things she did was to demonstrate to her team how they gave the company a high degree of credibility in the industry. Their forward thinking was gradually having an impact, and she reminded them of this fact as often as she could.
For instance, whenever one of her people went to an industry conference, she had that person give a report to the whole team on how their ideas were being slowly embraced by others. They really loved hearing that, she said.
So the skill I’m stressing here for maintaining morale in the fickle world of new product development is to broaden your team’s definition of success. Shake up their paradigm.
Try to identify the actual value your team is adding, such as giving the company credibility in its industry, a reputation for innovation, being perceived as a leader of technological change within the company, etc. These perceptions alone can attract new customers and qualified new employees.
So with the advantage of 20/20 hindsight, I can see how my dad’s work with the primitive Highway Hi-Fi in-car audio system paved the way for my simple act of inserting a plastic disk into a CD player while driving. He helped open a technological door.
In 1965, just four years after the car record player, Ford introduced the 8-track system into their new models. You know the rest.

We all know that we should back up our system as soon as possible. But if you’re like most of us, you will get to it tomorrow. The problem is that tomorrow rarely ever comes until you experience a serious computer failure and then it’s too late.
Taking the time to backup your data or entire hard drive is not as painstaking as it may seem. And the rewards of doing so will be great should your system experience a crash.
WINDOWS AND OTHER BACKUP SOFTWARE
If you have Windows XP you will need to install the new Windows backup utility from the Windows XP cdrom. Just place the WinXP cdrom in your cdrom drive and locate the line D:VALEADDMSFTNTBACKUP.
Here you see the first letter as D but if your optical drive has a different drive letter, exchange the D with your drive’s letter. To install the utility, click on the file named NTBackup.msi.
The backup utility will be installed to the system tools group. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Backup. There is a neat wizard that will walk you through the backup process.
WinXP’s backup utility will backup your entire hard drive and will make a recovery disk to boot.
One neat third party backup software you can try is NewTech InfoSystems at http://www.ntius.com where you can download their trial version and put it to use for 30 days. And if it’s your cup of tea, the full version will run you about $79.95
INCREMENTAL OR DIFFERENTIAL BACKUPS
You should back up your entire hard drive when you perform your first backup. After that it is best to perform an Incremental backup. This type of backup only allows you to backup files that have changed since your last performed backup.
Differential Backups copy changed files that have been added since you last did your entire backup. This type of backup is more detailed than incremental backups and is easier to restore.
BACKUP STORAGE DEVICES
You can backup your files on cdroms and have the files compressed to save both space and backup time. WinXP will compress folders, subfolders, and files during backup.
You can purchase compression software that will do the same, saving you cdrom storage space. The compressed files are automatically uncompressed once they are restored onto your hard drive.
You can also use a second hard drive as your backup storage device. We use two backup hard drives to be certain Ultimate PC Repair is up and running 24/7.
You can either purchase an internal hard drive and install it to your ide cable, or you may want to purchase an external hard drive that connects to your Universal Serial Bus or USB Port.
The advantage of the external drives is that they have very large amounts of storage space, transfer data fast, and can be moved from your computer to any other computer.
We use the Western Digital 170 Gigabyte External Hard Drive and we simply bounce it around to either one of our four computers with the greatest of ease.
USING ONLINE BACKUP SERVICES
You may also consider online services for backing up your data. If you lose all your backup data, say due to a natural disaster such as a flood, your online data is right there waiting for you.
Another advantage of online backups is that you can access, upload, or download your data from any location. It is best to use high speed internet access if you’re considering online data storage.
One such online backup service is Istorage located at http://www.iomega.com/istorage and charges from $2.49 a month for 50MBs to $17.95 a month for a big 1,000MBs of storage.
Or you can check out FilesAnywhere located at the url http://www.filesanywhere.com
Still another online service to try is CapSure located at http://www.capsure.com
Backup your system now in one way or another if you have not done so. If you have critical data that you simply cannot do without, take the time to invest in a backup device or one of the many online backup services.
Stop and perform those backups as soon as possible. You will be thankful you did should something go wrong with your computer. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
